Wild king salmon begin their lives in a gravel nest at the bottom of a freshwater river, lake or stream. At 10 weeks, they begin their journey downstream, then spend anywhere from one to eight years in the ocean, swimming throughout the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. Once they reach full maturity, they return to their home stream where they re-adapt to the fresh water and begin their upstream journey to spawn.
